Argentina – Jurassic Lake

Jurassic Lake holds some of the world’s largest wild rainbow trout. Raw nature, strong fish and fishing that leaves its mark.

Jurassic Lake, or Strobel Lake, is known for holding some of the world’s largest wild rainbow trout.

Here we experience fly fishing in wild and untouched nature. Big open landscapes, hard weather when Patagonia shows itself, and fish that can give memories for life.

This is a place many fly fishers have high on their list. Not only because of the size of the fish, but because of the whole setting around the fishing. The nature. The light. The wind. The silence. And the moments when a large rainbow trout takes the fly.

2instincts has more than 25 years of travel experience from Argentina. We are planning a new trip to Argentina, and Jurassic Lake will be part of the journey.

Jurassic Lake Lodge is located by Strobel Lake. This is the original lodge that fly fishers from all over the world visit every year. The lodge area is protected and strategically placed, with a short distance to the mouth of the Barrancoso River.

The outlet of the Barrancoso River is among the most productive areas of the lake. This is where some of the largest wild rainbow trout are caught.

The lodge is modern, cosy and fully licensed. Classic Argentinian food is served here, with good drinks alongside. Rooms, bathrooms, showers and common areas have smart and well-considered solutions, and the lodge has what is needed for a good and pleasant stay after long days outside.

A normal day at the lodge starts with a classic Argentinian breakfast and a good cup of coffee. Lunch and dinner are prepared by experienced cooks, and the meals are an important part of the experience. After a long fishing session, it is good to come in, get warm and see what is on the table.

At Jurassic Lake we use both single-handed rods and light double-handed rods.

Single-handed rods in classes 7 and 8 work well. For light double-handed rods, we recommend 11.4 ft, 12.8 ft or similar. For lines, floating line, floating line with intermediate tip and sink 1/3 tip are used. On some days, a sinking line can also be the right choice.

The equipment will be familiar to many who fish for salmon and sea trout around the world.

Our best recommendation for a single-handed rod is the N2 at 9.6 ft in class 7/8. For double-handed fishing, we recommend the N2 in class 8/9 at 12.8 ft. These rods cover the conditions well and give confidence when a large fish takes.

A tapered leader of 9 to 12 ft works well. A tippet of around 0.30 to 0.38 mm is normally a good choice. On windless days with low water and demanding conditions, you can go down towards 0.26 mm or similar. Then the smallest flies have to come out to fool the big fish.

Some days a dry fly is a good choice. Other days it is about the right line, the right depth and keeping a cool head when a large fish goes heavy.
